The history of the Camelback Kiwanis Memorial Fund begins with the untimely death of former Arizona Governor Wesley Bolin. As we all know, Wes was an active member of Camelback Kiwanis Club when he died. Shortly after Wes' passing, a significant sum of money was contributed to the Club to be expended as a memorial to Wesley Bolin. Because Wes had a long standing interest in Girls State, the Club decided to expend this money for scholarships to be awarded to the annually elected governor of Girls State. We did this for two or three years. By then, we had exhausted the money we had received to honor Wes. Meanwhile, other spontaneous memorial contributions to the Club were made as members, or those dear to members, passed on. A fairly substantial amount was received upon the death of Paul Stansbury, a retired Valley Bank Vice President, and a past president of our club. These contributions precipitated decision time.
The Club decided to create the Camelback Kiwanis Memorial Fund using, as seed money, the spontaneous contributions we had received since Wes' death. We felt that a contribution to our Memorial Fund would provide a more fitting and lasting memorial to a departed loved one than would a bouquet of flowers.
